December Member Spotlight: Mark Tomkinson

It’d be an understatement if I said that it’s been quite the year, but really it has. Since this is my last post of 2013, I wanted to tell all of you reading how much I have been blessed by the opportunity to write for the CFHB community this year. Writing has given me the opportunity to get to know many of you, which has been so rad. I’m still blown away by the fact that many of you actually read and (hopefully) enjoy my long winded rants about CrossFit, food, fitness related goals, pregnancy, (more food), mobility, squatting,(more and more food), etc. With that said, my last post is dedicated to a member of our CFHB community that makes his appearance at both the morning and afternoon classes. Now, don’t let the cool hair and quiet demeanor fool you, Mark Tomkinson is one heck of a competitor. You may have seen his six-pack carrying, slender blur running past you during a WOD and thought, “I must know more about this CrossFit ninja, Mark.” It was precisely this thought that led me to interview Mark this month.

Name: Mark Tomkinson

Occupation:Currently I’m doing residential construction (house remodels) and pursuing a career in law enforcement.

How long have you been Crossfitting? I’ve been crossfitting for about 2.5 years now, almost all of it at the wonderful CFHB!

What brought you to CrossFit Huntington Beach? I was training for a running race with some friends and they took me to a couple of intro CF classes. Despite being a dedicated runner at the time I was hooked instantly!

What is your favorite part about the gym? My favorite aspect of CFHB is the sense of community. Everyone here is always so welcoming and awesome! I couldn’t push myself half as hard as I do without everyone’s support at the box.

What were you most afraid of when you first started? I was most afraid of double-unders and Fran when I first started. I could barely get one double-under for months it seemed, and my fear of Fran was finally conquered last month when I did it RX for the first time.

What class time(s) do you attend? I go to any class I can make, sometimes 5am or 6pm if I have to. 9am is my favorite though!

What do you like about that class? I enjoy going to different class times and meeting new members, it’s always cool to find a new friend!

What are your fitness goals? Fitness goals….. to be like Superman.

How has CrossFit helped you move toward those goals? Crossfit has made me a more well rounded athlete. I used to just run, but now I can do a little bit of gymnastics, weight lifting, etc. and still get in a 10 miler when I want, but I’d rather be lifting weights and swinging on the rings!

Favorite CrossFit Lift? My favorite lift is the snatch because it’s so complex. I think I’m finally learning the basics of it and can’t wait to progress! Of course it’s also the most difficult lift.

What’s your “Spirit Animal?” My spirit animal is the Velociraptor duh!
